Grammy Award-winning Brave Combo Streaming from Wimberley Players
Way back before the pandemic, Brave Combo was scheduled as the grand finale of the Wimberley Players series, Five Saturdays of Cultural Sharing. at the Wimberley Playhouse. Now the Brave Combo event is moving online on August 8, beginning at 5:00 pm. Enjoy free of charge. From an amazingly wide range of musical styles, Brave Combo has planned this one hour, family-friendly concert specifically to wrap up the Players’ cultural series. The concept of Five Saturdays is to showcase other performing groups that provide top entertainment with insights into the heritage that produced their music. Previous performers have represented Teatro Vivo, Glass Half Full Theatre, and Spectrum Theatre, all of Austin, and Indigenous Cultures Institute of San Marcos. The Brave Combo concert picks up on the cultural sharing theme, with a program entitled, ‘The World of World Music.” “It’s really interesting to know what happens to music from elsewhere over time, on its way to our national music scene,” said Carl Finch, who continues to lead the group he founded 40 years ago. The dance band has rocked many a venue, from private parties to huge festivals and garnered two Grammy awards along the way. Headquartered in Denton, Texas, Brave Combo has performed from Lincoln Center to Paris. But the foot-stomping, online musical performance for the Wimberley Players will be suitable for all ages. Expect to hear rollicking polkas, a specialty of the group, plus conjunto, salsa, zydeco, and other genres popular across the country and especially in Texas. You’ll be invited to dance along at home. Funding for all Five Saturdays of Cultural Sharing is provided by a Cultural District grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts, matched by generous donations from individuals and organizations.
