First Stage Theatre Camp for Kids, August 9, 10 & 11
The Wimberley Players has again opened up the world of theatre to children with the First Stage Theatre Camp. In this three-day camp for kids aged 8 to 13, participants can peek behind the curtain into the dynamic and rewarding world of theatre. Held at The Wimberley Playhouse, the workshop will inform campers how theatre originated, demonstrate the way a theater’s space is used, and show by what means a production comes to life through the collaboration of multiple disciplines and artists. Kids will gain sound theatre training in a structured, fun-filled atmosphere and learn confidence, how to express themselves, and ways to work patiently and respectfully with each other.
By engaging in interactive activities, games and crafts, kids will learn the role actors, directors, stage managers, lighting and sound technicians, along with set, costume, and sound designers play to create a theatrical production. Led by Sydney Simpson, the workshop includes tours of the backstage, the scene shop, the prop storeroom, the dressing and makeup areas, and the costume vault. Kids will learn techniques to memorize lines and to improvise, as well as the skills to create scenery, props, and costumes.
On the final day of the workshop, students may lead their families on a tour of the Playhouse and share with them how they can become involved in supporting additional workshop opportunities and performance venues.
Leading the First Stage Theatre Camp is Sydney Simpson. She is an actress, music director, and certified voice teacher and vocal coach. Since graduating with her B.A. in Music Business from Florida State University in 2013, she earned a Teaching & Assessment Certificate through her study abroad in Australia, as well as a Voice Teaching and Coaching Certificate from New York Vocal Coaching while studying with renowned vocal coach Justin Stoney.
Children will bring their own lunches. Snacks and water are included in the workshop which runs from 10 am to 2 pm each day.
